Abstract: The production, mechanical properties,
and potential applications of ternary layered titanium silicon carbide are
discussed. The ternary carbide has a unique combination of properties that
could be applied in many components that require high-temperature operation,
high strength, resistance to wear and oxidation. It is not susceptible to
thermal shock, and behaves plastically at elevated temperatures. It has good
resistance to oxidation, extremely refractory, and maintains its strength at
temperatures that render unusable the best superalloys available. The material
has a layered microstructure that imparts self lubricating characteristics.
