During the Age of Enlightenment, Scientists were focused on characterizing the Laws of Nature. Before the Brilliant Experiments of Faraday et al, we considered Electricity and Magnetism as two totally separate disciplines. After the Ingenious Theories of Maxwell et al, we achieved complete Consilience, ultimately realizing that Electricity and Magnetism are just two sides of the same coin. Besides, the corresponding EM waves govern the field of optics, with the speed of light being calculable via the permittivity and permeability constants.

Interestingly, our Universe has notable Asymmetry: It apparently contains just electric charges but not magnetic charges.
