At Building Envelope Systems we had the pleasure of having Mohsen Bahmanyar, our new PhD student at CIRCLE lab, present on resilient design for extreme climates! He showed us a project of his own, a building in the desert of Iran, and how he incorporated passive heating and cooling strategies like thermal mass, courtyards, earth sheltering, stack effect, and shading elements optimized with digital tools. It was great for our students to see how concepts we’ve been talking about throughout the term can be applied to building projects in different climates — especially because Mohsen brought quantitative evidence on how each strategy reduced thermal loads and optimized daylight in his design.
