about

The Building Science and Engineering Group (BSEG) is a collaborative research unit at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.  It is currently directed by Professor Jin Wen.  BSEG was founded in 2010 by professors Jin Wen, Michael Waring, and Patrick Gurian with the objective of achieving more comprehensive and innovative approaches to sustainable building design and operation through the promotion of greater collaboration between diverse sets of research expertise.  BSEG is later strengthened by the addition of Professors James Lo and Simi Hoque and their research teams.

BSEG is currently working on projects in a wide range of research areas, including: grid-interactive and efficient building (GEB), artificial intelligence based building control and fault diagnosis, occupant behavior and wellbeing, indoor environment quality, indoor air chemistry, smart building technologies, Energy Conservation Measures (ECM) decision-making, and smart city.  The BSEG researchers conducting these investigations are drawn from many different professional and academic backgrounds, including architectural, environmental, mechanical, and chemical engineering, architecture, information science and the humanities.

BSEG’s projects are sponsored by diverse sources including agencies such as the U.S. National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, National Institute of Standards and Technology, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-conditioning Engineers.

We are always looking to add new members and collaborators.  We encourage those who have a general interest in researching sustainability in the built environment to contact us about future opportunities to work together.
