NSF PIRE: Building Decarbonization via AI-empowered District Heat Pump Systems Energy Research Exchange Bootcamp

Our BSEG team at Drexel hosted a fantastic International Research Exchange Bootcamp last week! Researchers, mostly PHD students, came from four countries (Denmark, Sweden, U.S., China), seven universities, and three disciplines (mechanical/architectural engineering, information Science, and Social Science).

This bootcamp is part of our NSF-PIRE project (PI Zheng O’Neill, co-PI Christina Rosan Teresa Wu K. Selcuk Candan ) which is focused on innovating Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques with an understanding of human need and behaviors to enable an efficient, human-centered, resilient, and socially justifiable operation of district- and community-scale heat pumps systems that promote a regional scale adoption of building decarbonization. The goal of this workshop is learn about the social, political, and ecological issues facing Philadelphia, when adopting decarbonization technologies.

We had the opportunity to have speakers from regional and local governments, community organizations, and universities to discuss issues such as energy justice, gentrification, and climate resilience that is related to Philadelphia decarbonization and urban planning. We are thankful for our community partners (Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA), Kensington Corridor Trust ) for hosting the thought-provoking field visits and their impactful work for Philadelphia!
