May 22nd : Kishore won the Research/Service Award competition for graduate students. Congratulations!

April 13th : Prof.Li presented an invited lecture in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

April 12th : Paper entitled “Patterning polyethylene oligomer on carbon nanotubes using physical vapor deposition” accepted for publication in Nano Letters, congratulations to Lingyu, Yao, Xuming, Prof.Yang, Prof.Hsiao, Prof.Chu, and Prof.Spanier 

April 12th : Kishore received Sigma Xi Grants in-Aid of Research for his research proposal entitled “Phase Structures of Hierarchically Self Assembled Liquid Crystalline “Rod-Coil” Block Copolymers with Bent-Core Mesogens”. Congratulations!

March 8th : Prof.Li received the 2006 Bradley Stoughton Award for Young Teachers from ASM International “For his outstanding enthusiasm for teaching Materials Science and Engineering classes and the establishment of the thermal analysis center for undergraduate education at Drexel University”

 

Summer

 

September 10-14th : Soft Matter Research Group attended 232rd ACS National Meeting at San Francisco. Prof.Li organized a symposium entitled “Block Copolymers as Nanoscale Materials” at the Meeting and presented two talks on Phase Structures of Block Copolymers and Polymer Patterned Carbon Nanotubes. Kishore presented a talk. Mike, Bing and Xiaofang presented posters.

September 6th
: Kishore received the George Hill, Jr. Endowed Fellowship for the academic year 2006-2007. Congratulations! This fellowship is awarded to qualified full-time Ph.D. candidates in the College of Engineering with proven excellence in their undergraduate and graduate studies and be able to demonstrate their potential to achieve academic excellence at the Ph.D. level and who wish to pursue a career in academia.

August 5th : Bing receives graduate student travel award to attend North American Thermal Analysis Society annual meeting. Congratulations!

July 6th : Matthew Hood joined our group to pursue his PhD. Matt has an undergraduate degree from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Carnegie-Mellon University. Welcome!

June 30th : Dr. Christopher Li is a co-PI on a new Materials Center of Excellence for research on polymers as awarded by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. This is a cooperative program that will receive $6.75 million over a period of nine years. PI on the grant is materials affiliated faculty member Dr. Giuseppe Palmese, Professor and Department Head of the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering. Other Co-PIs include Dr. Cameron Abrams and Dr. Joe Elabd of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. The Center proposal focuses on multiscale synthesis, modeling, and design of advanced polymer systems and includes projects on nanopore-filled systems, encapsulated nano- and meso-fiber mesh composites, hyperbranched polymers for segmented polyurethanes, ionically self-healing polymer systems, and computational modeling.

June 17th : Prof. Li received Outstanding Research Award from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Drexel University

June 17th : Undergraduate students Ben and Jon graduated after successful completion of their senior design projects. Congratulations! Ben is currently employed at the United States Patent Office in Washington DC

 

Fall

 

December 15th : Bing Li gets paper published in Journal of American Chemical Society regarding immobilizing gold nanoparticles with single crystals

December 6th : Bingbing Wang joins the group. Welcome!

November 8th : Mike Birnkrant gets paper published in Polymer regarding the structure of holographic polymer-dispersed PEG

November 2nd : Keith Fahnestock joins our group as an undergraduate researcher.  Welcome!

September 26th : Young-Joon Ham, David Steinmetz and Cristin Yavorsky join our group for completion of their senior design projects.  Good luck and welcome to the group!
