Ripplocations Making Waves

MaterialsToday featured recent work on ripplocations, published in Physical Review Materials. stemming from Dr.Barsoum’s collaboration between Drexel University and Colorado School of Mines.

The work showed, using atomisitic simulations on graphite and instrumented indentation on steel sheets, that layered materials confined under pressure ripple, or buckle, to make waves. In turn, the work has far-reaching implications on the deformations occuring during large-scale geologic processes.
