Babak wins the “Continuing Teaching Excellence Award”

Congratulations to PhD student Babak Anasori! He won the “2013 Continuing Teaching Excellence Award”. Undergraduate students and faculty nominate graduate student TAs for the awards, and recipients are determined by a Teaching Excellence Committee based on the nominations, recommendation letters and recipients’ teaching portfolio.
The 2013 awards were presented at the “Graduate Student Day”, held on May 23, 2013.

Babak receives the George Hill, Jr. Endowed Fellowship

Congratulations to Ph.D. student Babak Anasori! He received the competitive George Hill, Jr. Endowed Fellowship.

The fellowship is a highly competitive award offered by Drexel University for qualified candidates for the PhD program in an interdisciplinary program or research area in the College of Engineering.

Philly Materials Day 2013

On Saturday, February 2, 2013, the MAX Phase research group participated in Philly Materials Day, an exciting materials-focused event to introduce the general public to the world of materials science.

Philly Materials Day is an event hosted at Drexel University in collaboration with University of Pennsylvania that involves demos and activities by students, faculty, and contributions from local industry.

The ceramics lab demo was put on by MAX group PhD students Justin Griggs, Darin Tallman, and Nina Lane, along with visiting researcher Ivy Yan and B.S. student Matthias Agne.

Babak wins in “Science as Art” competition in MRS 2012

Ph.D. student Babak Anasori won second place in the “Science as Art” competition in the 2012 MRS Fall Meeting . His artistic image “The Happy 2-D World” was a combination of 3 different scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of MXene particles. The MXene particles were fabricated by Ph.D. student Michael Naguib.

Babak also gave a talk at the 2012 MRS Fall Meeting in Symposium GG: Mechanical Behavior of Metallic Nanostructured Materials. His talk was entitled “Nano-grained Mg Composites Reinforced with MAX Phases.”

Babak’s electron microscopy image wins the Roland B. Snow award in MS&T 2012

Ph.D. students Babak Anasori and Michael Naguib received the Roland B. Snow Award from the American Ceramic Society for their work on “Green MXene Turtle”. This award is presented for the best ceramographic work at the annual meeting of the American Ceramic Society and consists of a monetary award and a Steuben glass artifact. Their entry also received the first place in the Scanning Electron Microscopy Category. The SEM image that was captured by Babak shows MXene particles (Michael’s research). The MS&T conference took place October 7-11 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Babak received the Diamond ranking for the GEMS Award

PhD student Babak Anasori received Graduate Excellence in Materials Science (GEMS) Award through the American Ceramics Society, with a Diamond ranking!

Babak was one of 10 finalists to receive the GEMS award at MS&T in Pittsburgh (see information here), and was then selected as one of the top three students to receive the Diamond award based on his presentation on MS&T.
